Off board cap/turret boards, Vt-22 distortion
#1
Hi all,

New member Nick here with a VT22 distortion model with an SRO 15L driver, that I want to wake from the dead.
Last time I used this was ~1990 in Boston after an "old timer" tech went through it.
I turned it on, warmed it up plugged in the Fender and then hit a power chord with the amp on 10 figuring it'll either work or blow. Guess what:
Major light show behind the amp and literally blew out 2 bay windows in the brownstone flat I was living in.Never mind my ears, ouch..

I will start the resurrection here starting with the power supply caps. I don't even think it's worthwhile to try and reform the existing cans. I've read a lot on this site and talkbass etc. and I'm aware of a lot of the other issues.

What would help me is if anyone can post pics of off-board cap/turret boards that they have done. I followed the old V4 site, but cant seem to find any pics.
I have access to normal caps but not the multi-cans here (I'm living in Crete). I'm an engineer and this is not my first time around tube amps and such.
Any other advice is welcome

regards,
Nick
BTW, I need to rewire this for 220, and IIRC the PT has the correct color wires that get wired in series

Found this nice pic

I haven't done a recap of a distortion model without using multi-can capacitors. Frankly, I haven't done any V4/Vt22 without multi-can capacitors.
I remember someone from ampegv4.com forums had done it, but its really hard to find the space for all of those axial capacitors. The Reverb tank gets in the way.
Are the F&T multi-cans really that hard to get? they are made in Germany.

Well I've managed to get some F&T multi cans from Germany.
I'm using 2 cans 50uf x2 as suggeted for the main supply, inside the case of the amp.

Also found this
http://www.askjanfirst.de/dindex.htm?/k1.htm twistlock to replace the triple 40uf, and a bunch of axials for C303, 600v 30uf.

Any recommendations of higher quality caps for the bias supply (C207 C208) as I believe the life of the amp relies on those 2 caps.
Current caps are cheesy electrolytics.

Nick

I always used the Sprague atom 10uf @ 150V. They are good.
