There's one for sale that has repeatedly caught my attention (particularly, for the tall 4x12" speaker cab loaded with Altec 417B's) and I wanted to know what these amps sound like? I'm a huge V-series user and want to see if the tone is comparable. Seeing as how it's solid state vs. tubes, I'm guessing it may sound slightly more sterile, or maybe it has a straight forward clean tone, which I'm fine with, seeing as it'd serve as a solid platform for some pedals. If anyone has any experience with this amp, please, don't hesitate to contribute to this thread! I mean, late-60's/early-70's solid state can't be that bad, seeing as how Santana used that Gallien solid state amp at Woodstock and John Fogerty used those "Tuck n' Roll" solid state Kustom amps that sounded pretty good, right?
To avoid a conflict of interest, if its the one at Mike and Mike's Guitar bar, that is mine. I took it over there and its on consignment. Those guys are awesome.
The ST-42 is an awesome amp. The head is basically a solid state version of the GV-22. The amp is definitely not as reactive as the tube amps. but it does have a warm sound.
The cabinet a monster too. The cabinet on the main page of this site is actually my ST-42 cab with the back off. The altecs have a really clear and big sound. I think the cabinet would work well with both the ST-42 or a V4. I used it with my G12, plugged into a newcomb K-50 driving the 4x12. Super huge sound.
Im getting rid of it, because I can't justify having a huge rig like that in a small apartment like mine, when I'm not playing out anymore. so I've sold a lot of my bigger amps, and that was one of the last to go, because its really a rad amp, and its rare to find them in such good shape.
