Remove the old leather and padding. Wrap ribbon of heavy paper stock around the handle to build a nice thick padding and tape that in place. Then tightly stitch a upholstery leather handle cover over that by hand using heavy waxed thread and two heavy leather needles. The metal band will continue to take the load and the padding and leather you stitched on will make the handle usable again.
I have an Ampeg Guitaramp from 1956. The hand it in good shape but it rattles when the volume coming from the amp is high. I intend to cover that with paper and leather to totally enclose the parts rattling against each other.

Thanks! And sorry for the late response. I had some trouble logging back in to this forum, but it seems that is now resolved.
I've considered recovering the handle, but never really thought through the mechanics of it. Wrapping it with paper as a base might not have occurred to me, so thanks for that suggestion.
As I mentioned above, I have another amp with the metal strap missing. I guess I have no choice but to get something to fashion a steel strap and rivet it into place? Any suggestions on where I might source something that might work?
