Converting 2-prong to 3-prong in V-series
#1
I recall reading an old article on the ampegV4 forum about converting the 2-prong wire to 3-prong (grounded) config. There was like a detailed step-by-step run down on what to do, including removing the infamous "death cap." Can anyone relay that info on this forum for the world (and me Big Grin) to easily find, again? I have a couple of early-70's V-series amps that need to be brought to the 21st century (in terms of safety) and would like to have the right info for my tech before he goes jimmy-rigging the damn amps!

Also, I picked up some 14AWG power cable to go along with some snazzy Marinco power connectors and I'd like to know the measurements for the strain relief for this wire. It seems like the V-series amps used 18AWG power cable, so I'd like to find suitable strain relief for this cordage.

Thanks in advance!

I find it easier to reuse the same diameter power cable and strain relief that the amp came with. Too many techs will enlarge the hole in the chassis which isn't ideal. It is fine to stick with 18 gauge wire. Even the SVT used 18GA wire.

Check your amp first just to be sure but Ampeg used a Heyco SR 6W-1 1184 strain relief bushing on many of their amps. Heyco is still in business and you can order a sample from them if you need just one. I buy cable from Home Depot that matches the original and then add a black plug. The cable is General Cable, Carol Brand, part number 02602, SJOOW, #18/3, 300V, 10A, UL/CSA, rubber jacket, 0.3" outer diameter, made in the USA. The white lettering on the cable comes off with a solvent.

I haven't seen the procedure on ampegv4 that you referred to.
