Ampeg GV-22
#11
Well, I have secured a trade for an GV22 and a silverface 1x15 empty cab (for a Bassman 50 light duty bass rig) for my VT-22. The GV22 is a little rough, but everything works. I own a '72 V4B, so the VT-22 was expendable.

I am really excited to pick it up tomorrow! It has the original
CTS speakers, but I also have a pair of Celestion Rola g12-65's from an early 80's JCM cab that I might try in it as well.

Got the amp today and spent a few hours cleaning it, changing the nasty grill cloth, etc. It looked like it lived in a heavy smokers home for decades.. The tubes were so clouded I could barely read them. Grill cloth was nicotine red. Definitely needs some TLC. A speaker is fried.. They are CTS with aluminum dust caps. It also has a replaced output transformer.. Says Fender 0990774?

What ohms does this amp run at and how many watts? I'm thinking about different speakers, but I can't really find any info on these amps to determine my options. Help!

well, when the output transformer is original the amp runs at 16 ohms.

but thats going to be different now. the 0990774 is a reissue super reverb transformer.

those had 8 and 4 ohm taps. so I assume the tech that installed it hooked up the 8 ohm tap to the speakers and the 4 ohm tap gets engaged if the auxiliary speaker out is used.
which means you can get two 16ohms speakers and run them in parallel or get two 4 ohm speakers and run them in series.
I'd go for the 16 ohm speakers because you'll have more options. not many people make 4 ohm 12 inch guitar speakers.

the gv-22 is about 45 watts. same as a super reverb, so the output transformer is an acceptable substitute.
if you want something more akin to the original Heyboer or mercury magnetics would have one I think, but I don't think its necessary.

I have a schematic for the GV-22 and will post it soon. in the mean time go to the "docs" page on this site and look at the 1971 catalogs. there is some info there. I will post one of the pages here.

Very interesting and thank you so much for the info. The speakers that were in it were 8ohm and were wired in series.. So it was running at 16 ohms (?). With the replaced OT being a reissue Super Reverb (thanks for that clarification!), I guess it should have been wired for an 8ohm load. That pretty much eliminates the stock speakers and any other 8ohm speakers I have lying around.

However, I do have an early 80's JCM 800 2x12 cab that is loaded with a pair of Celestion Rola g12-65's that are 16 ohm's. I just inherited the cab, but the speakers sound great and seem to have great reviews online as good Celestions from that time period. Wondering how they would sound in the Ampeg...

I'm in the middle of moving, so I have to wait a couple weeks before I can do any speaker swaps.

You could definitely use those Rolas. Alternately, you could get a replacement transformer and recone the old speaker. The transformer wouldn't cost you much more than a hundred bucks I would guess, And the recone about $75.

Just to confirm..if it's a reissue Super Reverb OT, it's not 2 ohms? I thought they ran at 2 ohms.

Thanks!

You're right, 2 ohms for the Super Rev. Whomever repaired the amp, probably just stuck that in there to sell the amp. You would really need to replace it for it to be right, unless you can find two 4 ohm guitar speakers. Weber has a correct replacement OT for the GV-22. #W022848 is about the same size as the original OT, 40W, with 4 ohm output for $35. Or the #W404248 40W same size, but with 2-4-8 ohm taps for $46, or the larger Super Rev size 40W OT, #W018343 with 2-4-8 ohm outputs for $58. I've used them in both Fender repairs and clone builds and they're good sounding and reliable.

Thank you for your help!!! Fliptops sells one, OT-215, but it's $120. I like the lower cost options you mentioned, and thank you for providing the part numbers.

On a side note, it is amazing to me that I can't find ANYTHING on the Internet regarding that Fender OT part number. You'd think there would be some old parts catalog or something..

right.... there is also a 2 ohm tap. But there are also 4 and 8 ohm taps, and it is unlikely that whoever replaced the output transformer used the 2 ohm tap. but perhaps you should check on it.

its basically that transformer.

I'm holding one of those transformers in my hand. So you gotta believe me.
