Gemini II Power Transformer QUestion
#1
Hi everyone,

I'm new here - first post. I recently picked up a 1966 Gemini II off of CL. It's the 7591 power tube version. Cosmetically the amp was pretty rough - lots of dirt and grime. Inside the chassis/circuit were quite clean, EXCEPT that the canister cap had exploded at some point! The seller picked it up locally at a yard sale and was flipping it. He knew nothing of amps. His listing said it just made a loud hum when plugged in. Wish he hadn't "tested" it, but what can you do. The power tubes test bad, a few of the signal caps test bad, and one or two of the resistors show heat damage but still test within specs. Those will all be replaced. I have a new can cap from fliptops, and the remaining electrolytic caps will all be replaced.

All of that said, my question pertains to the power transformer. It appears that the original PT must have blown as well at some point and someone started to replace it. According to the correct schematic, the PT should be a 113-A PT made by Electrical Windings (EIA code 682). The OT should be model 215, also from EW. The OT in this amp is the correct model 215, with a date code of 682-609 - so the correct model/manufacturer and date of the 9th week of 1966. The power transformer, however, has a date code of 682-823, and a model number of 8930024. So it is an Electrical Windings transformer, apparently made in the 23rd week of 1968 (or 1978?). Can anyone advise on this model number - 8930024? Is it a correct/suitable replacement for the original model 113A? Before I drop $140 for a correct replacement from Fliptops, I was hoping someone here might recognize that model number PT and could advise on its compatibility with my 1966 Gemini II.

Sorry for the long post, and thanks in advance!

According to my 1975 Ampeg Replacement parts Catalog, The 8930024 is a G-15 (Gemini 15/Gemini II) Transformer. under the description they list it as "PT-113A--G-15"
I've attached a picture of it for you:

between 1966 and 1969 Ampeg was sold twice, so suppliers probably changed. but the transformer should be pretty much the same.
