Ampeg GS-12R Rocket II (1968 or 69?)
#1
Picked this amp up last saturday. I'm not really sure if this model is out there / for sale, so I didn't know how to do my research on it, but it's a really cool amp. The reverb sounds really good and the trem is incredible. It has an "afterbeat" button that makes the trem go into this glitchy psychadelic vibe that I haven't heard before.

Can anyone confirm this is a '68? Also, what exactly do I have? It says Rocket II, but isn't it a reverberocket, you know... cause it has reverb?

Going to upgrade / replace some of the tubes, get it cleaned up, but it sounds freaking awesome. It's warmer than a fender, and I really like that.

(sorry for the terrible picture)

the rocket II was one of Ampeg's entry level performance amp, most of their amps had 2 channels, where as the rocket II has only one. but otherwise its pretty much a reverberocket II with only 1 channel.

Did you ever find out what year your Rocket is? I just won this very same amp in an auction. It did not have a date listed.

After some research, I found that the GS-12-R was originally called the Reverbrocket II in '68 and '69, then Rocket II in '69.

Not exactly. The rocket II only had one channel, while the reverberocket II had two.

This is what I found in the 2016 Vintage Guitar Price Guide. However, I picked up my Rocket II today, and it indeed has one channel. I will drop a note to "The Guide", to have them edit it for 2017.

One question, is there a unique tool or bit required to remove the back panels on a Rocket II? The fasteners on mine do not look like anything I've ever seen. It looks something like a bow tie shape.

Thank you,
Chaz

The screws on most 60s ampegs are clutch head. You can find driver bits for them, or manual drivers. The size is 5/32 (...I think).
