I've got a 70's SVT that makes extremely loud fan noise (buzzing). The perforated tube shield does not have a large hole for the fan like the early SVTs have. I remove the fan and it is real quiet in the open air. If it gets within about 1/2" from the perforated tube shield it begins to buzz. It does not have to touch the shield at all. I bought another fan and it does the same thing. It is too loud even for practice sessions. I have an early SVT with the large cut out for the fan and it is real quiet. Do you guys have a fix for the late model SVTs?
It's not electronic. It's like the fan gets back pressure and makes blade noise like propeller airplanes do. It only does it when it's near the perforated metal. It's like there just isn't enough air flow because the perforated metal restricts the air flow. Think of how a small private plane sounds when it warms it's engine. I can't believe these left the factory sounding like this one does. My early SVT is very quiet.
hmm, that is really odd. I'm not sure I've come across that before.
about the only thing I could think of is to have someone who does metal work cut a circular hole large enough for the fan, and then find a guard like the one in the picture I'm attaching

I thought about that and it can be done except Ampeg welded the cord bracket right across the edge of the opening. I'd have to remove the welded bracket without destroying the perforated screen (and chrome plating). The fan looks original and was bolted tightly to the screen. It all looks factory but the noise couldn't have been acceptable. The other thing to note: since the late model screen doesn't have a large hole, you can't stick something in to pop the front panel without removing the screen. Maybe that was their intent?
