64 Super Echo Twin
#1
Hello all. I'm a complete Ampeg neophyte
Having mostly played fender or homebuilt fender AB763 amps most of my life.
I just bought a Super Echo Twin Et-2 the later model with 7591s and SS rectification. I was going to build my own stereo amp (I've built some deluxe reverbs and vibroluxes from scratch) but this appeared..kind of locally and I was curious. It should arrive within the week.

I use a Roland Re-150 space echo. The RE-150 has separate wet and dry outputs so I'normally use it in stereo using two amps.
I usually run a line out from my 'dry/main' amp into another channel on my 'wet echo amp" this keeps the width of the sound when the echo is turned off and gives me a fuller sound all around.
I play clean for the most part.
I was curious if there would be a way to accomplish this with the amp as is or if I might have to do some minimalistic mod to accomplish it.

How are these amps for holding up clean used in stereo, with a drummer?
Decent headroom? They aren't rated too high and I'm not looking to drive them into distorting

I have a light jazzier/swing/latin pop 4 piece and a louder 3 piece rock pop band

Regardless it looks like a cool amp concept. I like the way it accomplishes the tremelo and the reverb and how it allows them to be separated.

Any insights would be appreciated!

Sadly it has been re-tolexed (very well) in plain standard fender style black tolex, no cool diamond pattern (maybe a project for the future if I keep it?)
No Ampeg logo nor original corners, Though the corners look close-ish.
Also it has Garnet/Marsland speakers which have never been the best. Though sometimes they're actually emminence
I'll see if I like them when it arrives
I do have a few options here to try here
A pair of JBL D123s is one option

If anyone owns one and has used it in stereo and or mostly clean I'd be interested.
Thanks

Always wanted one of these. Alas, they don't come available very often, and I think my amp-buying days are over an any event....

I think I understand what you want to achieve. You want to use your Space Echo to drive the two speakers independently (in stereo). Is that correct? I think it should be achievable.

Looking at the schematic, the tremolo only seems to drive what I will call the "left" speaker. So that is a consideration. The left speaker drives the reverb tank, and that feeds the "right" phase inverter. The wet signal also gets to the left side, although through a couple of resistors. So, the tremolo affects the left, and the "echo" affects the right. Wet reverb signal will include any tremolo.

There is a switch (no idea what it is labeled, probably "stereo" or something) that controls the flow of the signal from the left channel (either to the right PI or left). Both of these pathways include interactions between the two sides, though. Not quite sure what that will sound like, so you will just have to try it and report back.

It looks to me like the left signal could be completely isolated from the right signal by removing the resistor between the cap at the top of the right tone control and the switch. It's an easily reversible mod. The switch would then give you stereo in that both sides would be independently driven, or blended (but only on the right side; left side would be silent and there would thus be no reverb or tremolo). In "stereo" mode, the left signal would still bleed to the right side through the echo unit, but that would be the only connection. Maybe that would work for you?

That said, I'm thinking you might be happy with it as is.

Cool Thanks
Before I monkey with anything I'll try it out as is and check out it;s possibilities
See if I like the speakers too.

I might be nice to have a full baxandall EQ stack on one channel, like a Gemini though the insertion loss might be too high.

Well here's the super echo twin in all it's retolexed respeakerd glory. The Marslands will be getting the boot, I have some period correct Rolas lined up, as well as a pair of ovations. Maybe one of each.

Channel one sees to run into both channels/speakers. is that right? Channel two seems to occupy on it's speaker until you flip the switch which determines if channel tow gets effects. then it seems to become like channel one.

I like the temelo and reverb and might steel those circuits for a build I'm doing

I'm not too keen on the one knob tone control as the amp is very mid-focused and you can't really change that.
